How to treat alcoholism | stop drinking alcohol naturally

Alcohol ruins the health and spoils the financial stability of the family. At least 62% of the people in India drink alcohol at least once in a while. Alcohol-related problems are a significant public health issue in the United States.

There are 17 million adults over the age of 18 suffering from alcohol use disorder (AUD). People use drug treatment centers and drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers to stop drinking alcohol.

Alcohol drinking statistics

In 2012, 3.3 million deaths in India were drugs and alcohol-related. Further, 10% of many medical conditions such as tuberculosis, stroke, epilepsy, and hypertension happened due to excessive alcohol consumption.

One common occurrence in AUD is binge drinking. Binge drinking occurs when men and women drink alcohol with the intention of getting drunk.

The limit of drinks consumed per hour is 4 for women and 5 for men to qualify as binge drinking. Drinking alcohol too much, too fast, and too often leads to alcohol use disorder.

Remedial alcohol therapy for alcoholism

Health professionals help to change drinking behavior through counseling and the use of medications. What works for one may not be suitable for another person. The treatment for alcoholism will include one or more of the following:

  • Alcohol counseling
  • Alcohol Detoxification
  • Medications
  • Behaviour modification
  • Mutual support groups

Before the treatment begins, they study the circumstances. The personal situation leading to the addiction is first studied. These will include the following factors:

  1. Financial position of the addict.
  2. Support of family and the people in his or her social circle.
  3. Previous instances of alcohol dependence.
  4. Personal motivation to become free of addiction.

One must study the reasons for the addiction. For this, the financial standing of the person gives a good sign. One position is that the person is spending all that he earns on drinking.

Another could be that the person is rich but spends a good part of his income on drinks. By knowing the position, one can begin the right treatment.

The important thing to do is to enlist the support of the family and friends. This will help the person resolve the compulsive forces and become independent. You should study the previous instances and see what kind of behavior he exhibited. This will help you to expect and act in the right way.

The last thing is to enlist the help of support groups. These are groups of people with the same problem. They will all discuss the problems and come up with the solutions, it is helpful as it helps the patient unblock their thinking and become free of the addiction.

Kinds of behavioral treatment center

1. Interventions for short periods

This is one-to-one or small group therapy. The treatment period is brief. They study and check the personalized feedback on the drinking patterns. The counselor then devises the strategy and presents it to the patient.

2. Cognitive behavioral therapy for substance abuse disorders

This is again a short-term therapy done on a one-to-one basis. Here the focus is on detailing the feelings and situations that lead to binge drinking.

The two, the counsellor and the patient, form ideas to deal with the stress situation that forces the patient to drink. They change the thought pattern and develop skills needed to tackle the compulsive drinking habit.

They analyze everyday situations that result in addictive drinking.

3. Marital counseling

This is a family therapy that involves the spouse and the other family members. The family relationship gets strengthened through interactions.

Strong family support increases the chances of overcoming the dependence on alcohol. This kind of support is not possible in individual therapy.

4. Motivational therapy to treat alcoholism

This helps strengthen the resolve and motivation of the patient to give up drinking. It begins with identifying the key advantages of remaining motivated and goes on to make a plan.

The patient and counselor focus on the pros and cons, the rights and wrongs of the action of the patient. When the patient has identified the right plan, he strengthens it by doing practical training.

Acceptance is the first step needed to begin the treatment. The patient must accept that he has a problem. This is not as easy as it seems because what seems like a problem to us may not seem so to the patient.

When you have no control over the use of alcohol, you have alcohol dependence. Once you have made up your mind to face the problem, make an appointment with your doctor. The doctor will also want to talk to your family members and friends.

The treatment begins with breaking down the dependence on alcohol by breaking the physical link. The detoxification clears the body system, and this paves the way for the “mental cleaning.”

This is a signal for the body to change the dependence by aligning the metabolic activity along normal routines. Again, this may not happen by only wishing for it to happen. You have to forgo alcohol consumption and stick to a normal diet for at least two weeks. By then, the body will break its bondage to alcohol.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms

Physical withdrawal can have dramatic symptoms. Among the many complications that arise, you will have outward manifestations such as these:

  1. Physical shaking
  2. Hallucinations
  3. Confusion
  4. Convulsions

You can treat most these using medications. Person will need to learn the skills and coping mechanisms to deal with compulsive behaviour when you return to familiar situations. You may have to undergo treatment program and counselling for this.

They give counseling either one-on-one or as group therapy. Joining a support group helps you connect with other people who face the similar problem.

Natural medicines for combating alcoholism

Several types of medications help those who suffer from alcohol addiction. These include the following:

  • Apple is best to treat alcohol addiction. Consume apple juice 5 times a day and eat an apple for lunch and dinner every day. It’s also good for cannabis addiction. In Ayurveda, we boil few apples and give to alcohol addicted person. It works great.
  • Another natural remedy for alcoholism is carom seed. Take 500gm carom seeds and grind for few seconds. Now take 8kg lukewarm water in a clay pot and soak these carom seeds in this water for 48 hours. After that put that clay pot on a low flame and cook this for 20 minutes. Put it on the flame and leave for the whole night. Next morning filter that water and store in a glass bottle. Whenever you feel a need of alcohol, just consume 4 tablespoonfuls of this water. WIthin 3 to 4 weeks, you will start to avoid alcohol.
  • Grind together capsicum, coriander, and sugar. Take one teaspoon in one cup of water every eight hours.
  • Boil one cup of water to which you added ginger. Let it reduce to half a cup. Add half a cup of milk. Add two cardamoms and one teaspoon of honey. Have this daily.

In the end, the person can become free of alcoholism only he or she wants to. If you make the conditions right, they will kick the habit and stay free from alcoholism.
