Sore throat and throat infection home remedies, causes and symptoms

A sore throat is an irritation in the throat that may border on mere itchiness or may have pain. Usually, the person will find it difficult to swallow. Severe cases may have signs like joint pain, rash, or difficulty in breathing. Here, we will talk about home remedies for sore throat.

People with a compromised immune system have a higher possibility of infection. Similarly, smokers and children are more likely to become infected than others. People with allergies will get infected more than others.

Sore throat causes

Most common causes include illnesses such as common cold, mononucleosis, croup, chickenpox, measles, and flu. It happens when the season changes due to the pollen in the air, or due to air pollution.

Dry air and allergies are the other two major causes of a sore throat. A night out in the cold air may cause a sore throat, but one can avoid it by using suitable warm clothing.

You need to see the doctor only in case of severe throat pain. Only a few cases of throat infections happen due to bacterial infections. These include diphtheria, whooping cough, and strep throat. If you have swollen tonsils that block the throat or have a sore throat with fever, you must go to the doctor.

Sore throat symptoms

In the initial stages, you might have upper respiratory infections. You might pass these on to people near you. Look for these symptoms first:

  • White patch on the tonsils
  • Glands in the neck are swollen
  • Person has a dry throat
  • Have hoarseness of voice

Sore throat is not a serious complaint, and they become alright on their own within a week. When you have a fever along with swelling of the glands you are certain that you have sore throat. Alternately, you have a fever and the tonsils are red and spotty. Another sign is that you have a dry cough and you feel a need to constantly clear the throat.

Home remedies for sore throat


The universal use of honey in foods and health remedies is undeniable. Here we use it with apple cider vinegar. The bacteria are killed by the acidic nature of the vinegar.

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 4-5 tsp honey

Mix the above ingredients and store it for use through the day. Take one or two spoonful of the mix three times a day.

Honey for sore throat

Baking soda

You can make this recipe within ten minutes and it is very effective. The reason is that baking soda has antibacterial properties and the slightly alkaline nature will help cure irritations due to the swollen tissues in the mouth and throat. To make this tea, you need these:

  • 1 cup slightly warm water
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt

Mix the ingredients together while the water is hot. Cool slightly and gargle with it. Do this three times a day.

Turmeric powder

Turmeric is used in Ayurveda for its antiseptic and antioxidant properties. In addition, it boosts the immune system and has anti-inflammatory properties. To make the preparation to treat the sore throat you need the following:

  • 3 cups milk
  • 4-5 tsp raw honey
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder or paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1-inch ginger made to paste

Take about 2 to 2½ cups of milk and simmer it with the water and honey. Add the ginger and turmeric when the milk reduces to 1½ cups. When the milk becomes 1 cup, take it off the stove. Drink warm turmeric milk. Consume turmeric curcumin supplement everyday.

Licorice root

Make a tea with licorice root. Licorice has anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. So, if you have inflammation or the sore throat occurred due to a virus, licorice root will solve the problem.

To make this, you need the following ingredients:

To make the tea, you need only one or one-and-a-half teaspoons full of the mixture given above. Powder the mix and store it. Boil the water and the mix for 10 minutes. Strain and cool slightly before drinking.

This is a time-tested remedy for curing a sore throat. For this, you must use water that is hot. So, heat water to the extent you can bear possibly. Put ¼ teaspoons of salt to one cup. If you have the habit of using mouthwash, then you can add a suitable amount to the hot water.

Use all the hot water for the gargle. If you leave any water behind, it will become filled with bacteria soon. Spit the water out after the gargle. This will loosen the mucus and remove any irritants.

Cool or warm fluids

Drink plenty of cool or warm drinks such as lemonade, fruit juices, or beverages. The tea and coffee must be warm without being too hot.

Ideally drink one glass of coffee in the morning and evening. You can add one glass at eleven in the morning and one at five in the evening. In addition, have a drink whenever you feel the urge.

This way you will have a drink before and after lunch. You can have a glass of warm beverage just before you go to bed.

  • ¼ brown sugar
  • 1/8 cup of water
  • ½ tsp alum
  • ½ cup vinegar

Use the marshmallow root in powder form for this home cure. Just steep the powder in hot water for 10-20 minutes.

  • 3 tsp marshmallow root powder
  • 1 cup water

Gargle with the warm water three times a day.

This is another age-old remedy to tackle your sore throat. Take 2 tsp of the powdered slippery elm in a cup. Pour 1 cup of boiling water on the powder. Steep it stir and filter. Drink it warm.
