Solanum xanthocarpum is a perennial, bright-green, branched shrub. It has ovate-oblong, elliptic and hairy leaves. The hairy flowers are complete, regular, and bisexual and 0.5-1 cm in length. The colors are purple and blue mixed.
The midrib and veins have two sharp prickles. Stems have prominent bodes and inter-nodes with prickles and hair. The berries are glabrous, bitter, with many seeds. The tapering roots are cylindrical, bitter, and 10-35 cm long. This shrub goes mostly in wild places.

This shrub is native to Asia. You find it growing in the wild in Pakistan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Thailand, Yemen, Iran, China, and Sri Lanka. You also find it in Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, and Bhutan.
In India, it grows as a weed in dry parts of Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

The Solanum Xanthocarpum has important medicinal properties due to the presence of sterols and glycoalkaloids. It has been in use in Ayurveda since the old days and is one of the important constituents of Dashamoola. The fruit contains, in addition, solamargine, lanosterol, carotene, and solasonine. It also has solasodine, carpesterol, and betasterol.
