At six weeks’ gestation and for the rest of your pregnancy, you’ll have to avoid some food items. Pregnant mothers should avoid:

  • Raw or under-cooked meat
  • Fish and eggs
  • Unpasteurized milk and dairy products
  • Deli meat
  • Smoked meat and fish
  • Soft cheeses
  • Smoking
  • Avoid spicy or greasy foods
  • Don’t lay down right after eating
  • Skip the hot tub and sauna
  • Avoid liver and liver products, such as liver pâté and liver sausage
  • Avoid all types of pâté, including vegetable pâté
  • Raw eggs or undercooked eggs
  • Avoid shark, swordfish and marlin fish
  • Limit tuna fish
  • Limit oily fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout, herring, pilchards
  • Avoid eating raw shellfish, such as oysters

You should avoid all of which can carry dangerous pathogens, advises the American Pregnancy Association. Moderate caffeine consumption is okay, but you should skip alcohol in any quantity. Alcohol can cause serious developmental defects in your unborn child.

Avoid constipation in any condition.
