Otorrhea natural treatment, causes and types

We remember the time when we were kids and had ear discharge from the ear. This flow of fluid might affect elders too. The medical term for this is otorrhea. When one has the condition, the earwax comes out of the ear. At times, this may happen due to rupture or injury in the ear. This happens when the person has trauma, ear infection, or eczema.

It is important to identify the symptoms in time and begin treatment as soon as possible. Children do not express the pain, and one might not know that he or she has this problem. So, be on the look-out for the signs.

The infection is termed as otitis media and one might have pain and fever along with this. Here are some home remedies to get relief from ear discharge that worked for some people.

Otorrhea home remedies for ear discharge

  1. Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil has mild anti-bacterial properties. It is used in the preparation of many home remedies. For ear pain and discharge, it usually works instantly.
    • Take 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar.
    • 1½ tbsp. of olive oil.
    • 4 drops of tea tree oil.
    • 1 tsp of colloidal silver.
    • Mix it all together.
    • Warm it slightly.Turn your ear up so you can put the mixture in.
    • Use a dropper to put in one or two drops of the mixture. Let it rest for 5 minutes.
    • Turn your ear down and let the mixture flow out.
    • Do this thrice daily for best results.

  2. Indian Lilac oil (Neem): You use the Indian lilac oil (neem) in the same way as you used the tea tree oil. Only this time there is nothing else to add. Put 2 drops in your ear. And wait for 5 minutes. Drain out and wipe clean. Do this twice daily.neem oil
  3. Olive oil: You use olive oil to loosen the ear wax or blockage. Use slightly warm olive oil. Leave the oil in the ear for 2 minutes before draining out and cleaning with cotton swabs.
  4. Warm Compress: A warm compress will increase the blood flow and decrease the pain one feels. Use a soft cloth, dip it in warm water and place it on the ear.
  5. Basil juice: You have many ingredients in holy Basil that help fight infection and reduce pain. Crush some leaves of the basil and put the juice in your ear with a dropper. Keep for some time and then clean it.
  6. White vinegar: Mix some alcohol with vinegar. Place two drops inside the ear. Wait 2 minutes and clean.
  7. Garlic: Crush a few cloves of garlic. Put the juice into the ear. Wait for some time. Clean with cotton swabs.
  8. Onion juice: Onion has antiseptic nature and helps reduce the pain. Crush some onion and put the juice inside the ear. Wait for some time before you clean it.
  9. Use natural methods: Tilt your ear so that it is facing the ground. Let the discharge flow out on its own. Clean with cotton swabs. Do this as often as needed.
  10. Steam inhalation: When you do steam inhalation, it opens the Eustachian tubes and releases the trapped fluid inside the ear.
    • Take hot water and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil. You can also use Rosemary oil.
    • Cover your head and face with a big towel and inhale the steam for 2-3 minutes.
    • Tilt your head to allow the fluid to flow out.
  11. Mango leaf juice: Crush 2-3 mango leaves and put the juice in your ear with a dropper. Leave it for a few minutes and tilt your head so that the fluid comes out. Clean with a soft cloth.
  12. Salt: This is the most common home remedy for otorrhea. This is an alternative heat treatment method. First take some salt and heat it in a pan. When it becomes hot enough, put the salt into a sock and tie the open end with a rubber band. Lie on your bed with the infected ear facing the ceiling. Place the sock on the ear and rest a while. This will give good relief from the pain.
  13. Breast milk: Use of breast milk is an Ayurvedic treatment method that has been used since olden times. The pus discharge from the ear is due to middle ear infection usually. It has antibiotic properties too that help decrease the pain and the swelling. Use a dropper to place 2-3 drops of the milk inside the ear. Do it two or three times daily until the infection is gone.
  14. Mullein drops: Mullein flowers grow in the wild. Take 2-3 teaspoons of the flower and put it in boiling water. Allow the mix to cool and strain it. Add this to 1 tbsp. of olive oil and mix it well. Use two drops in your ear and drain out. Clean the ear. Repeat the procedure twice daily until the symptoms disappear.

  15. Avoid foods that produce phlegm: By avoiding foods that produce phlegm, it is possible to reduce the discharge in the ear. Avoid dairy products such as milk, butter, poultry products such as egg, meat, gluten-containing products such as bread, barley, lentils, rye, and alcohol. Also avoid sugary foods, beverages, banana, potatoes, and cabbage.

You can take some simple steps to help contain the infection. For one, wash your hand often to prevent spreading the disease. Immunize your child with PCV which is Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine. And you can stop smoking for a while. Do not touch your ear very often.
