Marigold flower plant is an annual that grows in bright, sunny regions and have bright yellow or orange blooms. The leaves are pinnate and green. The flower heads are 4-6 cm in diameter and have both ray florets and disc florets. They grow to a height of 10-210 cm. They grow well in almost all kinds of soils with good drainage. You should not plant them near legumes since the marigold roots exude antibacterial thiophenes.  They bloom through the warmer months extending from May to October.

Common name

Common names for this plant are Mary bud, gold bloom, pot marigold, holigold, garden marigold, and ruddes. In Hindi its known as Genda. We have different kind of Marigold flower:

  • African marigolds (Tagetes erecta)
  • French marigolds (Tagetes patula)
  • Triploid hybrids
  • Signet marigolds (Tagetes tenuifolia)

Botanical name or family

The botanical name is Calendula Officinalis. African or American Marigolds are known as Tagetes erecta. It belongs to the Asteraceae family.

It grows natively in the Mediterranean region, especially Egypt. However, these days they are grown in most countries that have profuse sunlight.

The ingredients found in marigold flower that give it its medicinal value include linoleic acid, calendic acid, calendulin a plant sterol, oleanolic acid glycosides, tocopherols, triterpenes saponins such as triterpenoid, flavonoids, carotenoids, and polysaccharides. The preparations used in treatment include the petals of the flower and the seeds. You crush them and use in the paste form. You can make a decoction or tea with the flowers and seeds.

Skin disease: Use the petals of the flower for preparing a paste to apply on the skin. This is used to treat dryness, sunburns, warts, bites, acne cure, wounds, and rejuvenates the skin. It removes blisters effectively.

Respiratory problem: One of the best solutions for those with respiratory problems is to use the extract of the marigold flower. Use the dried flower, mix it with curds and have it daily. A stronger cure is got by eating the mixture of the seeds and the crushed flowers.

Urinary problem: For people with scanty urination, drinking the decoction prepared from the marigold flower will help. Crush 5-10 leaves and mix with the seeds. Have this daily in the morning, and you will be able to get relief from your urinary problem.

Piles: Using preparations of the marigold flower can help cure hemorrhoids, anal tears, and candida. Apply the paste of the flower to the anal region for two weeks continuously. You can also have a tea made from the petals of the marigold flower.

Anal prolapse: Anal or rectal prolapse occurs when the walls of the anus slide or slip from its place and begin to stick out of the anus. In most cases, surgery is needed, but, in some cases, it is possible to treat the condition using marigold flower extract.
