How You Can Make Your Homemade Pain Balm – Pain Relief Cream

Pain is as much a part of our lives as is the flowing stream and the wide-open sky above us. And yet, some of us have a mantra to deal with the pain that keeps our life happy and ticking smoothly. This mantra is the pain balm.

Homemade Pain Balm

Since most of the pain balms have the same ingredients and produce the same effect, one can make the pain balm at home. One only must be careful not to stray from the formula provided to make the balm. Pain in the muscle happens when we work to stress out too much. At times, we sleep in a funny position and then wake up all stiff and cramped. At times, the pain might be an indication of an underlying medical condition such as fibromyalgia or arthritis.

Either way, one balm can take care of all the stiffness and the pain if it is properly devised. In addition, they have a shelf life. The balm you made last winter will not be as effective as the one you made yesterday. This is because the ingredients you use in the balm evaporate or lose effectiveness as they age. So, always take care to use fresh stuff for the best results.

Use of pain medication has limited effectiveness. At times, they may have side effects such as nausea or vomiting. In some cases, liver damage has been reported. A few medicines might cause a heart attack. For all these reasons, it is better to avoid using pain medication if possible.

How You Can Make Homemade Pain Balm

Sometimes the balm is tedious to make and can take up a major chunk of your time. At times, the ingredients might not be available. So, you can get by with substitutes, but they might not be as effective as the original ones. You need to follow the rules of the naturopathy when you blend the oils for your balm.

Ingredients needed for the balm

  • Camphor – 1 tbsp.
  • Rosemary essential oil – 10 drops
  • Arnica essential oil – 7 drops
  • Extra virgin coconut oil – ¼ cup
  • Clove essential oil – 6 drops
  • Beeswax – grated 2 tbsp.
  • Sterile storage container

Method of making the balm

  1. Measure out the coconut oil into a bowl.
  2. Add the beeswax to it and put the bowl into the microwave oven.
  3. Heat it under mild heat for minute until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
  4. Add the camphor balls and heat again using mild heat.
  5. Now, add the Arnica essential oil, Clove essential oil, and peppermint essential oil.
  6. Mix the ingredients using a wooden stick or small spatula.
  7. Put the hot mix into a sterile container and allow to cool.

Once it has cooled to room temperature, check the consistency. It must be sticky and have a good aroma. Take some balm on your fingers and use it on the affected area. Massage it for a couple of minutes. Leave the skin exposed to the air. Cover the balm with a lid and keep in a cool place.

Precautions to use while making the pain balm

If you are using the balm for the first time, it is better to take some precautions. Here is the list of things you need to watch out for to be safe.

  1. Check the list of ingredients and make sure you are not allergic to any of the ones you used. If you are, then use a substitute to which you are not allergic.
  2. The balm is meant for external application only. Do not eat it or mix it with your drink.
  3. Avoid applying the balm to your eyes and nose. Also, do not apply the balm on open sores and wounds.
  4. If you develop any irritation after the application of the balm, rub the balm off immediately. Wash the area well with soap and water.

Alternatives and tips

These tips are designed to help you make the balm and make it better. Side effects from the balm are highly unlikely. Also, use the storing tips wisely, then your balm will last for a very long time.

  1. The balm might lose effectiveness if exposed to direct sunlight. So, keep the balm on a shelf or drawer that is not exposed to direct sunlight. Also, keep it protected from the heat.
  2. If the ingredients of the balm are not available, you can use any suitable substitutes that are effective. Most of the essential oils have the same effectiveness. So, if your recipe has rosemary oil and you don’t have it, use lavender oil. If you need to use cinnamon oil and you don’t have it, use eucalyptus oil.
  3. You can use a double boiler instead of a microwave since they produce the same results. In case you need to have another alternative, you can make a stand-in double boiler.
  4. Take a saucepan and use some water in the bottom of the saucepan. Heat it and place a bowl on top of this. Make sure the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. As you heat the water, the water keeps evaporating. So, add water to replace the water lost through evaporation.
  5. For stirring the ingredients, you can use a stick, a pair of wooden chopsticks, a hands-free pot stirrer, a wire whisk, or a spatula. Stir until all the solid particles disappear into the liquid.
  6. If you use beeswax, you can choose any form of the beeswax. They are available as pastilles, beads, blocks, and pellets.
  7. One must use a tin jar for storing but if you do not have tin jars, you can use sterile glass jars. Make sure they have a lid. Before you use the jar, sterilize it by soaking it in boiling water. Add soap to the water along with germicide and then remove it using tongs. Place it in the open to dry.

People use balms as they are inexpensive to make and produce effective relief. Remember, not all balms have the same effectiveness for all people. Also, do not use balms if you do not know anything about as it may have harmful side effects.
