Bags under eyes are not a good sight to see. When you have eye bags, you feel old and tired. Of course, they come with age. Here, we will talk about how to get rid of bags under your eyes.

Eye bags show the fatigue and stress. It is more of a cosmetic issue but getting rid of them is a top priority. The sagging skin, mild swelling, and dark circles make one look like they stepped out of a horror film. Luckily, there are many home remedies for bags under your eyes.

1. Get good quality sleep to get rid of bags under your eyes

One should aim to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep daily. This must be high-quality sleep. Do not read in bed and count it as hours slept. It takes 1-2 hours for one to fall into a deep sleep so don’t rush it. When you sleep well, the eyes will not get disturbed in the night.

When you sleep, keep your head elevated. It helps improve the blood flow throughout the body. This will reduce the puffiness a lot. It is a good idea to sleep on the back rather than on your sides.

If you don’t get good sleep, try to change your position. When you change your position, you will fall into a deep sleep. This will help reduce the incidence of dark circles under the eyes. Drink some water before you go to bed.

2. Cut out excess alcohol and cigarettes

The alcohol and cigarettes interfere with the sleep. You will not get deep sleep if you have alcohol before you go to bed. A glass or two of red wine is good. But, anything beyond that will only interfere with your metabolic activities. And while you are at it, you could also cut the salt out. This reduces the fluid retention.

Cigarettes make you jumpy. It affects your breath pattern and when the breathing becomes shallow, you become nervous instead of sleepy.  So, at least reduce the number of cigarettes before you go to sleep. Not smoking after your dinner is a good way to get good sleep. You can resume smoking in the morning.

3. Cool your eyes down with cucumber and potato slices

Use cucumber or ice cubes wrapped in a soft cloth during the heat of the day. Place them over your eyes and relax for 10 minutes. This will slow down your respiration and bring relief to the eyes. Cucumbers have a natural tendency to improve the tone of the skin. Close your eyes and place the slices on the eyelids. If you use ice cubes, the soft cloth helps absorb the dripping water.

During the evenings, keep two spoons in chilled water or in a bowl of ice cubes. Place one spoon over the eyelid while you place the other in the water. This is a good remedy for removing the eye bags and dark circles that happen due to damaged blood vessels around the eye.

Use potato slices on the eyes when you doze off. You can cool the slices and then use them. This will diminish the dark circles and do away with the puffiness.

4. Cold compress and tea bags for puffy eyes

If all else fail, you can always use the cold compress. The cold compress is useful because it helps to change the signalling of the nerves to the brain. Damages nerves from the region of the dark circles near the eyes will not have a strong signal. By using the cold compress, you will increase the intensity of these signals going to the brain. The brain responds by sending back strong responses and this improves the healing.

One can use milk or the cream of the milk for rubbing into the dark patches. The milk nourishes the skin and helps revive the nerves and blood vessels in the area. But, if one wants to go the old fashioned way, then one must try the tea bags.

Placing cold tea bags on the eyelids help more than anything else. The protein precipitation due to the tannin’s helps with the skin care. They have a protective and constricting effect on the skin. They have an excellent antioxidant nature that prevents the destruction of healthy body cells. People have used it since the olden times to get rid of the bags under the eyes.

5. Improve skin tone

The best substance for improving the skin tone is Vitamin E oil. Vitamin E is a natural anti-aging substance that helps remove the wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes and mouth. It has antioxidant properties that help protect the facial skin from the damage due to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. The vitamin encourages the growth of new skin cells.

Mix besan flour and yogurt to make a smooth paste. Apply this on your face and under the eyes before you go to bed. Let it remain for 10 minutes. Once it dries, wash with warm water. This will tighten your skin and add moisture to it. Do this at least thrice a week or until the bags disappear.

6. Improve the health of the skin using Aloe vera & Coconut oil

Improve the health of the skin by applying coconut oil on the face. The lauric acid in the coconut oil has a healing property. Coconut oil is a natural health product that cares for the skin. It has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Also, it is a good moisturizer. By improving the moisture content of the skin around the eyes, you protect it from damage.

The second option to use is Aloe vera. This sap of this garden plant helps to nourish the skin. It promotes healing and so the bruises around the eyes will disappear with the application of the gel of Aloe vera and a good night’s sleep. Use fresh Aloe vera or keep a bottle of commercial gel for use when needed.


You can mask the eye bags with makeup. But, it is better to go the natural way to get rid of bags under your eyes. Go for a walk and do some exercise. The improved blood circulation will help to ease the puffiness. Eat food items with Vitamin C to counter the effects of aging.
