Though it makes you uncomfortable, you can get relief using simple stuffy nose remedies. The main reasons for this are a cold or the flu. It might also occur when you have an allergy, or you have a sinus infection.

During nasal congestion, the blood flow in the nose gets increased leading to blockage of the nasal passage. The nervous system gets stimulated by irritants leading to more flow of blood. This again blocks the passage of air.

Home remedies for nasal congestion relief

It is easy for the membranes lining your nose to become inflamed. To soothe them, you can use some of the age-old home remedies.

1. Improve the moisture in the air for congested nose

Too less or too much humidity in the air can cause problems with the sinus. Drying up the air will irritate the nasal lining and cause the inflammation to increase.

You can get a humidifier or a vaporizer to increase the moisture in the air. Use a hygrometer to measure the humidity inside the room. The recommended value is 40-50% with 30% being too dry.

Humidifiers are more expensive than vaporizers. Humidifiers release cool moisture into the air with the help of a rotating disc. Vaporizers heat up the water to convert it into steam. This is a good remedy for the congested nose.

You can add plant extracts or herbs to the vaporizer to improve the quality of air in the room. With vaporizers, there is a risk of boiling water spilling and causing accidents especially in homes where there are children.

2. Holy basil leaves tea with ginger and black pepper

The holy basil plant has found use in Ayurveda for thousands of years. With its astringent taste and strong aroma, it has diverse healing properties. People consider it the “elixir of life”. We use the flower, plant, and leaves in powder, oil, paste, and in its natural form.

It helps remove the phlegm from the respiratory passages. This is due to the presence of essential oils and phytonutrients. You get protection from all kinds of bacterial, fungal, and viral infections.

To make holy basil tea:

  • Take 10 holy basil leaves, little ginger and little black pepper power ( 7-8 black peppers).
  • Boil all these in 200gm water for 5 minutes.
  • At the end mix one teasspoon honey in this mixture.
  • Strain this mixture and drink sip by sip. After finishing this tea, cover yourself with a blanket and rest for 20 minutes.

It will give your sure relief from nasal congestion and stuffy nose.

3. Relieve congested nose with hot and cold packs

If you use steam, it will loosen the mucus. Use a bowl of hot water and cover your head with a towel. Add eucalyptus oil, camphor, or menthol to the water. Or, you could use herbs such as rosemary, thyme, lavender, or mint. Eucalyptus acts as a decongestant, has antiviral properties, and is a potent antiseptic.

Keep a hot compress across your sinuses. Leave it on for three minutes. Then, remove it and use a cold compress. Keep this for 30 seconds. Repeat the process three to four times. Do this morning and evening for stuffy nose relief.

For the hot compress, heat some sand and wrap it in a cloth. Test it to see if it is too hot or bearable. For the cold compress, pack some ice cubes in a plastic bag and use it.

4. Change your sleep routine to get rid of stuffy nose

When you sleep late, the air is often cold, and this will dry the mucus and cause irritation. Try to sleep early and use a blanket to keep the air warm. Use a saline spray or body lotion to keep your nostrils moist. Avoid those based on alcohol because it will dry your tissue up.

Change the sleep position: Prop your head up when you sleep. This will prevent the accumulation of mucus at the back of the throat when you sleep without your head propped up. When your head remains propped 15 degrees upward, gravity will take care of the decongestion. 

5. Hydrate your system for nasal congestion relief

Congestion removes the water from your body. So, you must get back the water by drinking plenty of fluids. Some of the best drinks include the following:

  1. Chamomile tea
  2. Ginger tea
  3. Cinnamon tea
  4. Fruit juices

  • Crush 3-4 cloves of garlic and immerse it in boiling water.
  • Cover your head with a towel and place it over the steam rising from the hot water.

If your symptoms last for more than 10 days, or you develop a high fever, you must see your doctor at once. Also, go if your nasal discharge has blood or turns yellow or green color. Until you do, avoid allergic triggers such as cigarette smoke and very dry conditions.

There is a significant risk of becoming dependent on the nasal decongestant. Most of the time the sinus infections and allergies all come at the same time tempting you to double or triple your medication.
